Experiments were performed, using rice, barley and Hydrangealeaves, to examine the re-assimilation of respiratory 14CO2while photosynthesis is going on in an open air flow system. It was found that the leaves which had assimilated 14CO2 beforehandevolved, when kept under photosynthesizing conditions, threeto four tenths (variable according to plant species and externalconditions) of the amount of 14CO2 to be produced in the dark.Such an incomplete re-utilization of 14CO2 was observed alsoin spinach leaf homogenate as well as in the leaves which hadpreviously absorbed 14C-glucose. The 14CO2 output in rice leaves was found to be acceleratedby the light of high intensity. A possibility of light stimulationon the respiration was suggested. (Received October 7, 1961; )  相似文献

The effects of various mineral salts have been studied, bothsingly and in combination, on the uptake and distribution ofphotosynthetically incorporated carbon-14 in Chlorella. Whenmagnesium sulphate, potassium nitrate, and potassium phosphatewere combined in the same concentrations as are found in thenormal nutrient solution, the uptake of carbon-14 was increasedand more radioactivity was incorporated into the amino-acids,with a decrease in the percentage of radioactivity in the sugarphosphates when compared to the controls in distilled water.The most striking effect of the addition of just one salt wasobtained with salts containing nitrogen, particularly ammoniumchloride, which in one experiment increased the radioactivityfound in the amino-acids from 9.9 per cent. (expressed as percentageof the total soluble radioactivity found in this group of compounds)in the controls to 57 per cent., while the radioactivity inthe sugar phosphates fell from 64 to 7 per cent., correspondingly.The total uptake of carbon dioxide by the cells supplied withammonium chloride was three times as great as that in the controlsin distilled water. The relevance of these findings to the methodology involvedin experiments dealing with the path of carbon in photosynthesisis discussed, with particular emphasis upon the concept of a‘steady state’ and how it is thought this may bestbe achieved.  相似文献

We analysed mitochondrial genomic sequences under maximum likelihood (ML) criteria to explore phylogenetic relationships, and performed historical biogeography analysis with divergence time estimation for fishes of Order Cypriniformes (Actinopterygii: Ostariophysi). We added mitogenomes for eight new cypriniforms and one outgroup to a data set comprising 53 and six outgroup mitogenomes from a previous study to make our taxon sampling geographically representative. The ML tree reconfirmed monophyly of four basal cypriniform clades (cyprinids, catostomids, gyrinocheilids, and loaches including balitorids and cobitids). It also recovered 18 monophyletic groups largely equivalent to the subfamilial rank, and resolved interrelationships among most of these subfamilial clades. However, lower bootstrap support for the ML tree and higher approximately unbiased (au) probabilities for alternative topologies around some branches indicated problems that still need to be resolved. Historical taxon biogeography by dispersal‐vicariance analysis, a parsimonious reconstruction of past ranges, and gain‐loss ratio analysis at the subfamilial level, identified the geographical region of basal cypriniform divergence as southern Asia. Bayesian divergence time analysis dated the basal otophysan split, which gave birth to Order Cypriniformes, to the late Triassic around 219.5 Mya. The basal cypriniform divergence took place during the late Jurassic around 155.9 Mya. These dates coincide with the onset and completion, respectively, of the Pangaean breakup. Taking biogeographical analysis and node dating into account, we consider the most likely candidate for the initial geographical range of Order Cypriniformes to be the south‐eastern area of Mesozoic Laurasia (present‐day southern Asia, excluding the Indian subcontinent). Among cultural behaviors of chimpanzees, the developmental processes of complex skills involved in tool use are relatively well known. However, few studies have examined the ontogeny of social customs that do not require complex skills. Thus, in this study, we describe the developmental process of the grooming hand‐clasp (GHC), one of the well‐known social customs of chimpanzees at Mahale. We have collected 383 cases of GHC where at least one of the participants was 15 years old or younger during 1994–2007. First performances of GHC with the mother were observed at around 4–6 years old; the earliest observed age was 4 years and 4 months old. The first performances of GHC with nonrelated females were at around age 9 years, and those with adult males at around 11 years. However, some orphans engaged in GHC earlier than nonorphans. By gradually expanding GHC partners from the mother to other females and then to males, chimpanzees increased the number of GHC partners with age. Young males were observed to perform GHC with larger numbers of partners than were young females. GHC by young chimpanzees was shorter in duration than that among adults. Overall, the ontogeny of GHC showed several dissimilarities with that of tool use and was more an extension of the development of typical grooming behavior. For example, infants did not try to perform GHC initially; instead, mothers were more active in the earliest stages. These results suggest that not all socially learned cultural behaviors are acquired in the way of learning tool use. There may be various ways of learning behavioral patterns that are performed continuously in a group and that consequently comprise culture in chimpanzees. Am. J. Calcium uptake by spinach chloroplasts can be induced by thetransition from an acidic to a basic medium. This reaction dependsupon the pH difference. A difference by 4.3 to 4.5 pH unitsshowed a maximum efficiency for calcium uptake. The acid-baseinduced calcium uptake is susceptible to various inhibitorsin a way similar to that of light-induced calcium uptake. Thesame high energy intermediate (or state) produced in the chloroplastby this acid-base transition is inferred to be operating bothin calcium uptake and ATP formation. 1. To elucidate the factors responsible for the evolution of host specialisation, prey capture performance in hatchlings of two sibling ladybird species, Harmonia yedoensis and H. axyridis, feeding on four aphid species was examined. Harmonia yedoensis is a specialist predator that preys only on pine aphids in the field, whereas H. axyridis is a generalist predator with a broad prey range. 2. In H. yedoensis, sibling cannibalism in each clutch was intense and predation against pine aphid as well as other aphid species was moderately successful. In contrast, the predation success rate of H. axyridis against pine aphid was quite low. 3. Moreover, it was experimentally shown that increased maternal investment enhanced prey capture performance against pine aphid in H. yedoensis but not in H. axyridis hatchlings, despite their increased body size due to maternal investment. 4. In addition, morphological and behavioural analysis showed that hatchlings of H. yedoensis had longer legs and a larger head capsule size and could walk faster than H. axyridis. 5. In summary, the interactive effects between a large amount of maternal investment and morphological specialisation of the first instars may enable H. yedoensis to capture the pine aphid efficiently, a highly elusive prey for ladybird hatchlings. The ability of H. yedoensis to utilise the three other aphid species in addition to the pine aphid suggests that a trade‐off in prey capture performance is not the main factor in the host specialisation of H. yedoensis.  相似文献
